Places, palaces everywhere in Tarim. Many wealthy families have constructed mud-brick places after their return to Tarim. The city currently has 25 such buildings, many of which were constructed in the 1940s and 1950s as a means to boost the local economy, which had suffered during World War II.
The wealthy families took care to use mostly local materials and employ the citizens of Tarim in the construction of the buildings.
The most commonly known of these is the Qasr al –Kaf which was converted into a museum in 1997, in part to pay for the upkeep of the structure.
 Like most of the palaces in Tarim, Qasr al-Kaf is a wonderful cocktail of Hadhrami, southeast Asian and colonial architecture.
